In Black Canyon National Park

After spending $$$ and more than a week in Grand Junction we’re finally back on the road. Sully got a transmission overhaul, new ball joints and bearings, we also took time to clean it and change door seals.

We head 75 miles south east of the city to see a lesser known National Park: Black Canyon of the Gunnison. As we park at the first overlook on the south rim, we get a breathtaking view of the canyon. We’re at about 2500 meters above see level, and at the deepest the Gunnison river is 840 meters below us. The canyon is made of hard rock that has been uplifted then cut through by the fast-moving water. Pictures don’t translate how deep and rugged the canyon is.

We go back to Sully to keep driving in the park but there’s a little pond under the transmission, it’s leaking fast. Of course it’s Saturday, mechanics are closed for the weekend. So we go to town and buy some transmission fluid to keep driving the weekend, and on Monday morning we’ll go back to the garage… loosing more precious sunny days on the trip before winter…
