Visiting Alcatraz
Spending four hours on “the Rock” seemed a minimum to learn about the different stories of the island and visit its grounds. We took a tour with ranger John and did the audioguided tour of the cellhouse. Alcatraz was a fort (1853, just after the beginning of the gold rush), a military prison, then the federal prison (1933 to 1963) that hosted Al Capone. The island was then occupied by native americans claiming it in 1970 before becoming a park in 1972.
