In Fredericksburg
We take it slow today knowing that we’ll have some busy days in Washington coming up. We drive to Fredericksburg, the lovely town is well preserved, the old buildings and cute front shops are nice to walk long. We eat at a little pizzeria, Benny Vitali’s, who claims being home of the Virginia slice, a slice bigger than the New York one!
Later in the afternoon we take a walk in Manassas National Battlefield Park, the site of the first major pitched battle of the civil war in July 1861. Both sides were excited and thinking about the victory, civilians went to watch. None realized how heavy the fight would be, challenging their naive expectations. 18000 Union soldiers faced the same amount of Confederates, resulting in 5000 casualties. They all realized a long war was at hand.
