Driving the North shore, part 2

After a long night fighting mosquitoes in the van we head back to lake Superior to continue visiting the US north shore of it. We drive along the water where the landscape changes to cliffs and walk in Tettegouche State Park. We stop at Russ Kendall’s smoke house, a local institution, to buy some smoked fish for a late lunch. We end at the Western tip of the lake in Duluth to watch ships going in and out of the port. It is the largest and most inland port in the world, handling 35 millions tons of cargo each year, exporting mainly coal and iron ore to other ports of the great lakes and as far as Europe. The boats leaving north America go through each of the lakes and through the whole st Lawrence river to reach the Atlantic. When leaving the canal of Duluth they navigate under an aerial lift bridge built in the 30s and inspired from the same system seen in Rouen, France. The area is highly industrial and a shock in comparison to the wild Canadian side, the water looks worse than the Seine in Paris…
